John Sweetser grew up in Loveland, Colorado, in a family where engineering was part of everyday life.
“Everyone in my immediate family is an engineer,” he says.
fter graduating, Sweetser launched his career at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
For roughly five years, he worked on modeling and simulation projects supporting national security initiatives. The work required technical precision and systems thinking. It also exposed him to large-scale challenges where small decisions could have significant consequences.
After Sandia, Sweetser joined Lockheed Martin, where he spent approximately five years focused on space vehicle design.
The move allowed him to apply his engineering background to some of the most advanced aerospace programs in the world.
Sweetser’s next major chapter began when he joined Sierra Space.
Over nearly six years with the company, he took on increasing levels of responsibility and was eventually promoted to Chief Engineer.
The role placed him at the center of major engineering efforts, requiring him to coordinate teams, manage technical decisions, and help guide long-term strategy.
